Attention modes
Agents amplify the value of long-horizon attention. When you're ramping up in unfamiliar territory, you need sustained focus to build context — and an agent makes that ramp-up dramatically faster. Uninterrupted time matters more now, not less.
For familiar work, the opposite is true. The agent runs autonomously, and you provide judgment in short bursts. Fragments of time are enough.
Voice changes the input
Voice is becoming the better interface for agent collaboration. Not just because speech-to-text has gotten good enough — but because when you talk, you say more. You provide richer context, more nuance, more of the thinking behind the decision. Typing compresses your thoughts. Voice lets them flow.
This has a physical consequence: you need a space where you can talk freely. The future workstation might be a soundproof booth with a mic, not a desk in an open office.
The isolation tradeoff
Both of these trends point the same direction — toward isolation. Collaboration needs are shrinking as one person plus an agent can do what used to require a team. And if voice is the primary interface, you need physical separation too. The same tools that make you more productive also make you more alone. Whether that's a problem or a feature probably depends on the person.
